Understanding the Healthcare Delivery System

Course Objectives:

In this course, the healthcare delivery system is studied focusing on social service, health insurance, and government and institution/agency policies that social workers need to understand to be effective case managers, brokers, and coordinators in medical settings. These areas include but are not limited to: Medicare/Medicaid, transitioning to alternative settings: Skilled Nursing Facility, Acute Rehab, Hospice, In-patient Psychiatric, In-patient substance abuse rehabilitation and other facilities. Details of practice settings include hospitals, outpatient offices, long-term care facilities, and medical rehabilitation centers will also be discussed.

Course Goals:

1-Articulate an understanding of the American Healthcare Delivery System, with emphasis on Pennsylvania practices

2-Have a Generalist understanding of how health insurance, state/local policies impact social service within medical setting
