CPHSSWCE0045 - Social Work in Primary Care I: Core Principles of Behavioral Health Consultation in Primary Care
Course Description
Course Description: Behavioral health consultation is a fast growing field in psychology and social work. The behavioral health consultant (BHC) is a key member of a fast-paced, collaborative care team that helps improve patient outcomes. Approximately 70 percent of all mental health disorders are first reported in primary care, and more than 80 percent of all psychotropic medications are prescribed by physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Co-occurring morbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, chronic pain, and obesity involve behaviors and health habits that trigger, exacerbate, or perpetuate symptoms declining health, increased severity of symptoms, and impede daily functioning. To help address the continuing growth of patients in primary care with complex needs, behavioral health integration is utilized by many health care systems throughout the country as a care model that embraces individuals, families and communities in the treatment of patients. This workshop will introduce participants to the concept of integrated behavioral health.
