Free  Mental Health First Aid—PASCEP0900 Course 

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is an eight-hour course that teaches the skills needed to identify, understand, and respond to signs of behavioral health challenges or crises. Philadelphia is one of the first metropolitan areas in the U.S. to implement MHFA on a large scale. DBHIDS offers the training free of charge for individuals who live, work, or study in the City of Philadelphia.  Once a certified aider, you will be able to recognize behavioral health signs and administer aid until appropriate treatment and supports are received, or until the crisis is resolved.

 A certificate is awarded to successful completers by the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual DisAbility Services

The adult Mental Health First Aid course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health related crisis or problem. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. The adult course is available in both English and Spanish. Course participants come from a variety of backgrounds and play various roles in a community including: faith groups, management, community work, non-profit and for profit settings.  Participants who complete the course receive a three (3) year national certification.

Mental Health First Aid - Youth

Youth Mental Health First Aid USA is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. Mental Health First Aid uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to assess a mental health crisis; select interventions and provide initial help; and connect young people to professional, peer, social, and self-help care.
