Course Description

     Join Temple University Harrisburg on an exciting 11-day trip exploring Italy….. the food, the culture… and their social service systems!  Accompanied by an experienced English-speaking guide, this trip includes visits to olive groves, wineries and castles, all while including an education on the services provided to the country’s most vulnerable citizens.  The trip will explore Italy’s social service system, as well as services for orphans, victims of domestic violence and addictions, refugees and prisoner reintegration.  Attendees will have the opportunity to visit a variety of communities, talk with human service professionals and experience fabulous Italian culture and cuisine.

     This opportunity will provide attendees with a unique experience to observe and learn about this fascinating culture and country, while earning up to 28 continuing education credits. This is an incomparable opportunity you won’t want to miss!

Social Work CE Information:

This social work educational program has been approved for 28 continuing education hours, through co-sponsorship of Temple University Harrisburg a PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, and Professional Counselor pre-approved provider of continuing education.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal. Certificates of attendance documenting continuing education hours will be issued by Temple University Harrisburg.

Sunday, 6/25: Depart Rome airport and travel through Abruzzo Mountains & National Park to the ancient Roman town of Vasto on the Adriatic coast. Check into HOTEL then meet for a relaxing welcome dinner.

Monday, 6/26: Overview of Italian Social Service delivery system & conversations with regional Italian social work agencies  Traditional Italian lunch, followed by a visit to Social Farm Recinto di Michea – mental illness treatment center. Free time to explore and dinner on your own.

Tuesday, 6/27: Visit to community center for women victims of violence. Casual lunch at the Art farmhouse. Followed by a visit to an olive oil mill with olive oil tastings. Free time to explore and dinner on your own.

Wednesday, 6/28: Meeting with social workers in Vasto and a visit to Family House Manuela – home for abandoned and disabled children. Lunch on your own.and free time to explore.Evening visit to Vasto Senior Center, followed by a traditional dinner in Vasto

Thursday, 6/29: Visit to therapeutic community for drug addiction in Lanciano with lunch @ Farmhouse Caniloro in Lanciano. An afternoon tour of Roccascalegna Castle. Free time to explore and dinner on your own.

Friday, 6/30: Visit to refugee center in Vasto. Lunch at Trabocco Punta Tufano and an afternoon tour of San Giovanni in Venere Abbey. Free time to explore and dinner on your own.

Saturday, 7/1: Visit to Casa Lavoro (formerly a jail, now a prisoner reintegration center). Lunch on your own.and free time to explore in Punta Penna Beach. An afternoon tour of Fontefico, award-winning winery with tastings and a farewell dinner

Sunday, 7/2: Depart for Rome.Visit Hermitage of San Domenico in Villalago & Village of Scanno with lunch. Arrive in Rome. Check into hotel. Free time to explore Rome and dinner on your own.

Monday, 7/3: Temple University Rome: sessions on Italian Code of Ethics and Addiction. Lunch with group. An afternoon guided tour of Rome by TU Rome art history faculty, followed by dinner.

Tuesday, 7/4: Educational session on refugees, with a visit to refugee center. Lunch on your own.and free time to explore with an optional guided or self-guided tours. Dinner with group..

Wednesday, 7/5: Depart Rome for US. Flight times to be determined. Transportation back to Harrisburg.

Trip cost:

  • $4,475  - double occupancy (*estimate)
  • $4,645 - single occupancy (*estimate)

* Final costs will be determined by the total number of participants and final confirmed flight costs - Numbers above are a close estimate at this time.

Payment Schedule:

  • December 5, 2016: Deposit Due - $250.00 Non-refundable deposit (applied to the cost of trip total. Individual cancellations will not be refunded deposit)
  • January 15, 2017: Payment 1 - $1,000
  • March 15, 2017: Payment 2  - $1,500
  • May 15, 2017: Final Payment - Balance of total trip cost
Fee Includes:
  • Roundtrip airfare from/to Philadelphia International Airport
  • All hotels, transportation, pre-arranged tour entry fees, tips, taxes, breakfasts, plus one additional meal per day during the Abruzzo tour
  • English-speaking tour guide
  • CEU certificate 

Fees Do NOT Include:

  • Additional individual excursions or activities
  • Meals other than one meal a day specified in final itinerary
  • Snacks and drinks between meals
  • Personal expenses
  • Travel insurance

CANCELLATIONS 
If for any reason you need to cancel your trip, a penalty is charged as shown below (calculation is in calendar days): 

  • Up to 45 Days prior to departure - 25% of the Total Cost
  • 15 - 44 Days prior to departure - 50% of the Total Cost
  • 7 - 14 Days prior to departure - 80% of the Total Cost
  • 0 - 6 Days prior to departure - 100% of the Total Cost
  • Deposit is non-refundable

PROGRAM CHANGES 
Although we try hard to avoid cancellations and changes to the holidays, due to the forward planning of our holidays this is sometimes unavoidable. We must therefore reserve the right in any circumstances to cancel or make changes to your holiday. This includes cancellations due to force majeure or under booking. With the exception of force majeure, these changes can be major or minor. In the case of a major change or cancellation (a major change is defined as a change to accommodation of a lower rating for all of your holiday or a change of holiday dates) we will advise you as soon as possible and we give you the following options: 

  • Accept the new arrangements

  • Take an alternative holiday subject to availability (if a lower price we will refund the difference; if a higher price you must pay the difference)

  • Withdraw and accept a full refund of all monies paid (excluding holiday insurance premiums or additional costs we have incurred on your behalf)

In the event of a minor change (any change that is not defined as a major change above or force majeure), the above options will not be available to you. We also reserve the right for any reason or at any time, at our sole discretion, to decline to accept or to retain any person on a holiday as a client particularly if their conduct is disruptive and affecting the enjoyment of other participants on the trip, and we shall be under no liability for any costs incurred by such a person as a result of our doing so. 

LIMITATION OF RESPONSIBILITY 
The organizer shall not be liable for any damage/injury (physical or otherwise) to participants as a result of the physical activity performed during the trip, the consumption of alcohol, breakage of equipment and materials or for any other reason which, within the limits of professional diligence, could not have been foreseen or resolved. The organizer is not responsible for expenses (transportation, meals, hotels) not included in the program but necessary to reach the meeting point or to leave the finishing point on conclusion of the trip.
