Course Description

Teeth with large bone loss, particularly those with combined endodontic and periodontic lesions or root damages, are often deemed beyond saving and extracted. However, with accurate diagnosis, consideration of the patient’s overall health and oral hygiene care, and interdisciplinary treatment planning, in some cases, these teeth may still be preserved with the proper approach and treatment. This course is designed to empower clinicians with the knowledge and decision-making skills necessary to manage challenging cases of the complex periradicular bone loss. Participants will learn to differentiate between five different types of endodontic and periodontal lesions and explore the anatomical relationships between the root canal system and surrounding periodontal structures, providing a foundation for accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment planning. The course will also explore non-surgical and surgical endodontic treatment protocols using bioceramic materials to maximize the potential for tooth retention. Participants will gain insights into advanced endodontic techniques, such as perforation repair and management of root fractures.

Learner Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Classify diagnostic criteria for endodontic-periodontic lesions.
  2. Identify and describe the pathways involved in complex bone loss.
  3. Assess the prognosis of teeth with the complex bone loss.
  4. Discuss non-surgical and surgical endodontic plans for managing complex lesions.
  5. Enhance patient communication regarding treatment options and outcomes.
