Course Description

This workshop offers a condensed overview of the essential elements and principles of play therapy, including a review of the history of play therapy and the profession, the role of the play therapist in a variety of settings, the stages of the play therapy relationship, common presenting problems of children coming for therapy, the evolving research that guides play therapy interventions, the basic play therapy skills and the training/supervision guidelines. Three of the most widely used theories of play therapy, including Child Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive-behavioral Play Therapy, and Eco-systemic Play Therapy will be introduced. An experiential component will focus on exposure to the basic play therapy skills through the observation of local professionals, instructors, or videotaped experts performing play therapy. The content will contain materials to develop basic play therapy practice skills and an understanding of theoretical approaches of play therapy at the level required for eventual registration as a play therapist.

This workshop has been approved for 3 social work continuing education hours as well as 3 play therapy continuing education hours.  Temple University Harrisburg is an Association for Play Therapy (APT) Approved Provider #07-206, continuing education hours in social work as well as in play therapy will be awarded to participants who attend the entire workshop.

For individual session payments: cancellations received up to ten (10) business days prior to the start of the scheduled session will receive a full refund. If cancellation is received nine (9) business days to the first day prior to the start of the session there will be a $10.00 processing fee assessed, and the balance paid will be refunded. There will be no refunds if cancellation is first day of session or once the session has started.

Weather Related Cancellations: In the event of inclement weather, TUH will make every effort to cancel events with as much advance notice as possible. Notification will be sent via email/DestinyOne once a decision to close or delay has been made. In all instances TUH will follow the University’s and/or the agency’s cancellation decisions.
