Reverend Sharon Washington Risher didn’t ask to be catapulted into the media spotlight. It was the result of tragic loss and horrific circumstance.

On June 17, 2015, Dylann Roof was welcomed into a prayer service at the Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. Their goodwill was met with hatred and violence as Roof opened fire on the parishioners, killing nine, including Risher’s mother and the church’s sexton, Ethel Lee Lance. Rev. Risher also lost two cousins and a childhood friend during this senseless act.

Since the tragedy, Risher, a staff chaplain and trauma specialist at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas, has been outspoken about the nation’s gun laws and is one of the national spokespersons for the grassroots advocacy groups Everytown and Moms Demand Gun Sense.
