Course Description

The 5-Year refresher course is mandatory and must be taken every five years starting the year after taking the Basic Protective Services course. This course is in addition to the required annual protective service enrichment training. The 5-year refresher course does not fulfill the minimum 6-hour protective services in-service training required under 15.127. Participation in this course is an additional requirement set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.

The training is required for any staff person involved in protective services. This includes but is not limited to:

  • All full-time or part-time protective services workers
  • Back-up protective services workers
  • Stand-by protective service workers
  • On-call protective services workers
  • Protective services supervisors
  • Back-up protective services supervisors
  • Agency administrators that participate in the program either as back-up investigators, supervisors, or clinical advisors

Registration: 

  • Individual online registration is required for each person

Training Details:

  • Sign-in begins at 8:00 am
  • This training will run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
  • No food refreshments will be served- only coffee service in the morning
  • Lunch is on your own 
  • Certificates for 6 Hours will be issued upon completion of the entire training
  • Partial certificate for late arrival or early departure is not available

NOTE: It is difficult to maintain room temperatures that are comfortable for all participants, and the room temperature may vary. A sweater or jacket is helpful if the room becomes too cool. Participants are asked to turn off cell phones while in the training session. Please step outside of the room if cell phone usage is necessary.

 

Learner Outcomes

This one-day training will refresh and review critical elements of the Older Adult Protective Services statute and regulations including definitions, notifications, classification of Reports of Need, facility investigations, mandatory reporting, voluntary reporting, record maintenance, confidentiality, and older adult rights. Upon completion of this course, participants will have the ability to:

  1. Summarize key points of the protective service regulations
  2. Appropriately categorize a Report of Need and initiate an investigation based on regulatory criteria
  3. Explain mandatory and voluntary reporting
  4. List area agency on aging requirements for notifications and investigations
  5. Describe confidentiality requirements for protective services

This workshop has been approved for six Social Work continuing education hours by Temple University Harrisburg. Temple University Harrisburg is a pre-approved provider of continuing education by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.  These credit hours satisfy requirements for LSW/LCSW/LMFT/LPC biennial license renewal.

Attendees must first attend and complete PDA Protective Services Basic Training, 5 years prior to attending this refresher course
